Medical Alert Systems > South Carolina Medical Alert Systems and Senior Resources in South Carolina

The senior population of South Carolina is among the fastest growing in the country. It has increased 35% since 2000; more than 650,000 people over the age of 65 now call South Carolina home. The Lieutenant Governor?s Office on Aging is tasked with providing programs and services to this growing community, to ensure that seniors live long and fruitful lives.

The vision of the Office on Aging “is to be the first resource considered when anyone needs information, service options, and guidance concerning issues related to seniors and vulnerable adults.”

Programs include:
-- Aging and Disability Resource Centers: Provide a single, coordinated system of information and access for seniors and caregivers.
-- Alzheimer’s Resource Coordination Center: Providing information, referrals and caregiver support for people with Alzheimer’s and related diseases.
-- Better Choices Better Health: Helping seniors manage chronic conditions.
-- Emergency Rental Assistance: Help with paying the rent for low-income seniors.
-- Family Caregiver Support Program: Support and assistance for caregivers.

-- State Health Insurance Program: Better known as SHIP, providing unbiased information and counseling on Medicare.

South Carolina does not have a program for it, but all seniors should consider getting a medical alert system. Most health experts agree that such a system is crucial for the well-being of seniors who live alone or with a spouse. It provides the peace of mind that you are never really alone; that someone always has your back.

Now that seniors are living longer and more active lives, there are alert systems that you can take with you. Packed with GPS and cellular technologies, these small devices fit in your pocket so you will always be monitored wherever you go.

There are no “local” medical alert companies; they all operate on a national level, including in South Carolina. To compare the services of more than a dozen top companies, check out this link.

South Carolina is dedicated to caring for veterans of the U.S. military. The Veteran Directed Home and Community Based Services is a program for veterans who are at risk of being placed in a nursing home but would prefer to remain in their own homes. The veteran would have to be willing to participate in directing their care after being assessed for the services he or she needs.

This is South Carolina’s way of honoring and repaying those who have risked their lives to protect our country.
