Medical Alert Systems > New Jersey Medical Alert Systems and Senior Resources in New Jersey

Some 1.2 million people over the age of 65 live in New Jersey, one of 12 states in the nation with senior populations of more than one million. The New Jersey Division of Aging Services has been tasked with providing services for this growing sector, with a goal of keeping them in their own homes for as long as possible.

Those programs include:
-- Adult Day Care: A safe environment for seniors whose caretakers are not available during the day.
-- Adult Protective Services: Investigating allegations of abuse, neglect or exploitation of seniors.
-- Community Choice: A program designed to ensure that seniors know their options when it comes to long-term care.
-- Congregate Housing Services Program: Providing meals and potentially housing for low-income seniors.
-- Fall Prevention: Increasing awareness and education of the vulnerability of seniors to falls.
-- HealthEASE: Coordinating and expanding health promotion and disease prevention services for seniors.
-- Health Education: Providing information on nutrition, physical activity and other health issues facing seniors on a daily basis.
-- Jersey Assistance for Community Caregiving: A broad array of in-home services for seniors who are at risk of being placed in long-term care facilities.
-- Money Management Program: A bill paying service to help seniors manage their finances.
-- Pharmaceutical Assistance to the Aged and Disabled (PAAD): A comprehensive program to help seniors pay for prescription drugs.
-- Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly: Better known as PACE, it is designed to provide services to keep frail seniors out of nursing homes and remain in their own homes.
-- Project Healthy Bones: Exercise and education program for those at risk of osteoporosis.
-- Senior Gold Prescription Discount Program: Offers a different co-payment structure and income eligibility than PAAD.

It is not among the services that New Jersey provides, but all seniors should consider getting a medical alert system. Such a system provides peace of mind to seniors who live alone or with a spouse that they are never really alone – someone is always watching over them. Most advocates for seniors suggest a medical alert system as part of the plan for a long and happy life.

And with the advance of technology, you can now take your medical alert system with you wherever you go. A mobile system has built-in GPS and cellular technology that works everywhere; perfect for the active senior.

Every medical alert company operates in all 50 states, including New Jersey. The services offered by each company vary, so you can compare them here.

Health insurance is obviously vital to every senior. Most people qualify for Medicare, but like many programs from the federal government, Medicare can be confusing. So New Jersey offers the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) to help.

Volunteer counselors are on hand to answer any questions about health insurance. It is free of charge, and since the counselors are unbiased, they will not push seniors towards any one particular product or service.
